Phonetic changes in the borrowings from the Turkish language

Abstract

Phonetic changes, peculiar to the Georgian language, are striking in words borrowed from the Turkish language.As a result, the borrowed words are pronounced in the same way as Georgian words, in particular:

დირეღი<დირეგი (თ. დირექ-ი), ღალიბა<გალიბა... In Georgian the letter “g” is mostly pronounced as Turkish “ğ” and it is more natural for the Georgian language. Both the first letter of the word and the last consonant change.

ღამაზი - (არ. gamaz - გამაზ) - ,,evil”, "Barbarian": ,,ის კაცი ღამაზია“ (იმ.)...

შაფხა – (şapka) - ,,a hat”: ,,წყალში ჩაცვენილი Áუნანების შაფხები მეიცუა დენიზმა” (თ.ქ.)

Thus, the replacement of consonants in the borrowed words of the Samkhruli dialects is subject to the same patterns that are characteristic of the Georgian language.
